“I chose to practice Hematology/ Oncology because it blended the most recent advances in biomedical science and the need for compassionate understanding of each patient’s feelings. Cancer is an extreme experience affecting the mind as well as the body.
It’s all about the human connection,” said Roxana Vlad-Vonica, M.D. of Unity Hematology/ Oncology. “It’s not just chemotherapy, but also pain control and spiritual support. Our highly skilled and experienced nurses are deeply committed to our patient’s needs,” said Dr. Vlad-Vonica.
“Cancer is challenging not only for the patient, but also to the loved ones. We spend a lot of time talking to family and friends, to make them understand what we are doing, and how they can help with their loving, supporting presence”.
In addition to cancer patients, the Infusion Center of the Oncology/Hematology Unit treats diseases that require intravenous medication, such as rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn’s disease, multiple sclerosis and iron deficiency anemia.
“Our door is open to everyone. We waive co-pays for Unity employees and volunteers. I have treated patients who are major donors to the Health System as well as patients who have no insurance,” said Dr. Vlad. “This is a highly rewarding profession. Helping people was my dream”
Dr. Vlad-Vonica, who graduated medical school in Romania, completed her residency at Unity Health System and her Hematology/Oncology fellowship at the Providence Hospital/ University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Moving to America allowed her to work at the cutting edge of her profession. “We leave no stone unturned to give our patients the best treatment and care.”
Every spare minute of nice weather finds Dr. Vlad-Vonica, her husband, and 5 year old daughter enjoying the out-of-doors. Dr. Vlad-Vonica smiled when she said that her daughter has learned all about dinosaurs at pre-school and wants to be a Paleontologist. |
