Shoulder replacement surgery may be considered for those suffering from arthritic shoulder pain that severely limits your everyday activities.

Your shoulder is the most movable and flexible joint in your body – but it’s also one of the most fragile. Whether you have a sudden injury or issues with chronic wear, shoulder problems can be very painful and may have life-altering effects if left untreated. Shoulder surgery can reduce or eliminate that pain, and help you get back to your daily routine.

If you need a shoulder replacement, your surgeon will decide if a total or partial shoulder replacement is necessary. For a total shoulder replacement, your surgeon will replace the worn areas of the bones that meet the joint. They will then replace the ball-shaped end of your upper arm with a metal component, and the socket-shaped cavity of your shoulder blade will be relined with special plastic. If your surgeon uses only the metal humeral components (humeral head and stem), the procedure is called a partial shoulder replacement.

While healing and recovery times vary from person to person, most patients go home within one to two days. Occasionally, patients may need additional recovery time at a rehabilitation facility.
Your timeframe for returning to your daily routine will vary also – your surgeon will let you know when you can resume driving and gradually increase your activities.
