Knee replacement surgery may be considered for those suffering from arthritic knee pain that severely limits your everyday activities such as walking and bending, when pain continues while resting or when you’re not getting the results you want from other treatments. A knee replacement can relieve pain and get you back to enjoying normal, everyday activities.

Your doctor would only recommend knee replacement after you’ve been thoroughly evaluated and tried less invasive measures. If you have advanced arthritis, medications or injections can’t give you the same long-term relief as a knee replacement.
Total knee surgery is one of the most successful procedures in medicine. In the U.S., more than 400,000 people have their knees replaced each year.

Over time, the cartilage that cushions our bones can wear away, causing pain and discomfort.
During surgery, we replace the worn out surfaces of the knee with metal and plastic components. Your surgeon will decide which type of implant is best for you based on many factors, such as your age, activity level, bone quality and other associated medical conditions.

While healing and recovery times vary from person to person, most patients go home within two to three days. Some patients need additional recovery time at a rehabilitation facility,
but this is rare.
Most patients use a walker for about four weeks after the operation. You can typically resume driving within four weeks. After 10 to 12 weeks, you’ll be able to gradually increase your activities and get back to what you have been missing because of joint pain.
